The scenes involving Ripley and the Marines exist in two forms: a shorter version that jumps directly from Midway station to the Weyland-Yutani hearing, and what’s called the “director's cut,” which adds a waiting room with a large screen showing simulated scenery. When I initially watched the brief version, I was puzzled about how Ripley seemed to instantly bond with Newt. The idea of "sister solidarity" felt fake, but seeing the “director’s cut” helped explain that. The expanded “director's cut” shows Newt's family on LV-426, a lengthy conversation among the remaining Marines about what they’re up against, and an action sequence involving the dangerous Sentry units. It seemed like the decision-making abilities of those at Weyland-Yutani took a noticeable dip, with Carter Burke sending out a harmful order to "Hadley's Hope." Basically, Ripley is working a regular job during the day while also having recurring nightmares about an “Alien birth” each night. Carter Burke and Colonial Marine Lt. Gorman come to see her and tell her that contact has been lost with LV-426. After agreeing to work with Weyland-Yutani, Ripley gets on board the "Sulaco" along with a group of Colonial Marines. To her dismay, an android named “Bishop” is part of the crew, which reminded her of Ash, the science officer from the "Nostromo." The dismissive Colonial Marines don't take Ripley's story seriously as they prepare for what they call the "Bug Hunt.” The heavily armed group discovers no colonists, but instead finds proof of a fierce battle. Then something emerges from hiding and is pursued by Ripley. “Mewt,” the only survivor of "Hadley's Hope," looks at the soldiers with an attitude of indifference, saying "it won’t make any difference." A computer search locates the colonists gathered far below the power plant. The Marines go down into a lower level and discover just how accurate Ripley’s account was. After escaping from a terrible situation, the survivors try to isolate themselves from the “Xenomorphs” as much as possible, sending "Bishop" on a mission to destroy another landing craft. The Aliens attack, and the soldiers are killed off one by one, leading to an abduction and a confrontation in a room full of eggs. This film is better than the original, and it sets up "Ripley and the Convicts." 8/10.
