It’s wonderful to see Dirk Bogarde at his best as Sergeant Major Coward, portraying a British prisoner of war who dedicates himself to disrupting his German jailers during the Second World War. Drawing from the real-life exploits of Mr. Coward, the film depicts how he bewildered and frustrated the enemy through various means, including escapes, digging tunnels, acts of sabotage, and even bribery. Alongside Alfred Lynch, playing Corporal Bill Pope, they seem to be having a great time as their teasing of the guards becomes frequently humorous—though undeniably successful—and extends to creating an innovative bomb sight and somehow earning the Iron Cross! A capable supporting ensemble, including Richard Marner, Reginald Beckwith, and Colin Blakely, contributes to keeping this entertaining adventure moving along well, highlighting what people can achieve through cleverness.
