This made-for-TV movie takes cues from "Carrie," adding in some supernatural touches. The story centers on a teenage girl who’s picked on for being overweight, but she has her own methods of dealing with those who torment her. What's behind her ability to retaliate? Lee Grant portrays her mother, who is supportive, and Helen Hunt appears as her younger sister (who was thirteen during filming). "The Spell," released in 1977, is a television horror film that blends elements of "Carrie" with witchcraft, influencing later TV movies like “Summer of Fear” (1978) and “Midnight Offerings” (1981). Although it's the weakest of these films because the main character isn’t very appealing and the overall style feels rushed, there are some good parts beyond the acting. These include a realistic depiction of family relationships, a scary scene involving a curse, and an unexpected twist at the end. The film is 1 hour and 27 minutes long; a trimmed-down version runs for 1 hour and 13 minutes, which effectively removes some unnecessary scenes. Filming took place at Universal Studios in Universal City, California. GRADE: C+/B- (5.5/10)
