John Chard on On the Waterfront

10/10 · Sep 6, 2020

You have delusions of grandeur, but let me tell you something—you’re nothing more than a low-grade, unpleasant person! And I'm satisfied with what I did to you, do you understand? I truly am! On the Waterfront is Elia Kazan’s direction and Budd Schulberg’s screenplay adaptation from Malcolm Johnson articles. Marlon Brando, Lee J. Cobb, Eva Marie Saint, Karl Malden, Rod Steiger, and Pat Henning are in the cast. Leonard Bernstein composed the music, and Boris Kaufman was responsible for the cinematography. Terry Malloy, portrayed by Brando, used to be a boxer with promise and aspirations. He’s now working as a longshoreman on the docks under the control of mob boss Johnny Friendly (Cobb). After witnessing the murder of another dock worker, Terry struggles with whether or not he should share what he saw with the crime commission, especially when he develops a close connection with the deceased man's sister. Ranking among Kazan, Brando, and Kaufman’s finest work, On the Waterfront presents a grim depiction of a corrupt area in New York as hardworking men struggle to survive under the control of dishonest union bosses. The dialogue is remarkably straightforward, contrasting sharply with the bleak atmosphere—poor living conditions and docks shrouded in mist concealing terrible truths. Despite seeming to justify informing, and placing blame on those in positions of power, it's a landmark film that rightfully earned every Oscar award and nomination it received. From the powerful "contender" speech (pay attention to Steiger’s expressions), to Brando’s painful realization of his loved one’s death, and culminating in the memorable, cathartic final scene, this is as good as classic cinema can be. 10/10
