Chicago finds itself under a cloud of terror following the emergence of another victim—the work of a violent axe killer. Those observing the events have some insight into the identity of the perpetrator; his voice is familiar, which lessens the sense of immediate danger. However, an interesting puzzle does unfold. By coincidence, "Oliver" (Lew Ayres) notices someone seemingly pursuing "Edwina" (Laraine Day) during a nighttime walk and alerts an officer. It seems straightforward enough until she reacts with alarm, and unexpectedly, they team up to investigate the crimes and figure out why she's been targeted. The fact that "Oliver" is currently between acting roles allows him to adapt to various situations as they attempt to solve the mystery—a pursuit which places them in considerable peril. I appreciated the unsettling concept at play here, blending a touch of science with a plot that’s unusual and occasionally quite smart—even though the resolution feels somewhat predictable and hurried. Ayres is committed and complements Day well, contributing to an enjoyable eighty-minute experience. Is this how insanity begins? Not necessarily!
