It's not common to see films focusing on the HM Royal Marines during wartime, and this one tells the story of their attempt to canoe up the Garonne River in order to strike at important German vessels. The storyline itself holds some appeal, but both José Ferrer and Trevor Howard give performances that feel forced; their portrayals seem as uncomfortable as the connection between their characters suggests it should be. Despite this, the film does acknowledge the bravery of this risky operation with impressive visuals, and Ferrer demonstrates a real understanding of the danger involved in directing the project.
