Those familiar with "Above Us the Waves" will likely grasp the basic premise surrounding James Caan’s character, “Bolton,” a man driven to demonstrate his worth after a past disaster. He tends to push his men hard, which doesn’t exactly endear him to the crews training in small submarines on a secluded Scottish loch. When Nazi paratroopers launch an attack, they discover the operation has been compromised, and things move quickly as their mission is revealed: to navigate Norway's fjords and strike at a significant enemy vessel that has been disrupting transatlantic shipping routes. The entire undertaking feels like something new and untested, but will “Bolton” and his team be successful in reaching their objective? It’s fairly conventional material, though still watchable—particularly the scenes of the submarines, essentially glorified sardine cans, being thrown around in rough waters while dodging nets, mines, and the effects of confinement. Caan does what's needed to keep things progressing, and the supporting actors – a rather ordinary group of British performers – contribute enough to build up to a satisfying conclusion, but I don’t expect this film will stick with you for very long.
