John Chard on The Admirable Crichton

7/10 · Mar 15, 2019

The Governor and The Daddy The Admirable Crichton, a film based on J.M. Barrie’s play that playfully critiques the British class structure, features Kenneth More in the lead and feels like discovering something special. The story centers around Crichton, who begins as a butler but finds himself unexpectedly governing a desert island after he and the aristocratic family he works for are shipwrecked. The narrative highlights how decent though privileged people struggle when faced with basic survival needs. Crichton, however, is ready for this new situation; he knows how to cook, swim, fish, and even make fire – skills completely lacking in the wealthy members of the group. Naturally, some suspension of disbelief is required, since there are four attractive women on the island who all become interested in Crichton! That’s the kind of movie it is. However, it's a skillfully crafted story with excellent performances, especially from More and Cecil Parker as Lord Loam. As an audience member, I certainly appreciated seeing some lovely ladies, particularly Sally Ann Howes playing Lady Mary. The outcome feels predictable, but honestly, that’s exactly what I wanted in this kind of film. It's a highly enjoyable way to unwind. 7/10
