This western offers a pleasant experience, featuring several ex-lawmen, and notably, Dean Martin departs from his usual roles as either a hero or a singer. He portrays "Flood," a man who controls nearly everything in town except for the stagecoach line, which remains under the ownership of “Molly” (Jean Simmons). Following an ambush on the stagecoach, “Dolan” (George Peppard) emerges and becomes involved with local issues, aligning himself with the determined “Molly.” With "Flood" displaying unwavering self-assurance and aggressively enforcing his authority, it ultimately becomes the responsibility of the new arrival to gather a group of reasonably upright, albeit cautious, residents alongside his injured longtime associate “Ben” (John McIntire), forming a force capable of confronting their adversary. The supporting cast is strong, enhancing Peppard’s surprisingly captivating performance, which complements Simmons and Martin, who delivers an effective villainous turn. Once the characters are introduced, there's considerable activity; the romantic elements are understated—Simmons certainly isn't portrayed as helpless—and while the plot follows a familiar path, the resolution introduces a degree of intricacy and a unique approach to resolving matters.
