Disney’s 1962 venture into live-action felt disappointing right from the beginning. I really wasn't pleased with *‘Moon Pilot’*. It has way too much dialogue for my taste; it seemed like eighty to ninety percent of the movie was just setting up what should have been a bigger payoff, which then wrapped up very fast. There's an element of intrigue connected to a side plot, but that goes nowhere, replaced by conversations instead. The acting isn’t particularly memorable. Tom Tryon is acceptable, though mostly unexciting as Capt. Talbot. Dany Saval is passable as Lyrae, although her character doesn’t get much development; it seems her purpose is simply to be a woman. Brian Keith (Maj. Vanneman) and Edmond O'Brien (McClosky) are the most noticeable, but both seem to be acting too broadly throughout, particularly Keith with his loud delivery. Honestly, my only positive comment concerns the interest generated by Lyrae’s character. There was a chance for a decent film here, but James Neilson and those working with him didn't manage to bring it out. I expect we will eventually see a new version of this story.
