This film seems primarily intended to showcase Yvonne de Carlo, and while not awful, it’s a rather ordinary pirate story weighed down by an excess of musical numbers. Philip Friend portrays a character with a hidden identity – essentially a nautical "Zorro," maintaining a normal existence during the day but operating as the pirate “Baptiste” at night. De Carlo plays “Deborah,” a Louisiana singer who becomes infatuated with him, and she pursues him despite his existing relationship with “Arlene Villon” (Andrea King). Elsa Lanchester and Henry Daniell provide some amusing moments, but ultimately the movie centers on Robert Douglas’s portrayal of the relentlessly villainous "Narbonne," who discovers Baptiste's secret and attempts to destroy him. There are sword fights, pirate raids, and plenty of cannon blasts, yet it feels like a lesser version of many similar tales about a woman encountering a dashing sea rogue. As someone who enjoys this type of film, I can say that it occupies 80 minutes in a vibrant, though predictable, fashion.
