This film feels like a sunny reimagining of “Brassed Off” (1996). The story starts with trumpeter "Barney" (Tristam Summers) who doesn't seem overly upset when he finds out his father has died—apparently, they hadn’t been close for quite some time. He does attend the funeral, but there a man turns up claiming Barney’s trumpet as payment for £10,000 that his dad owed. Fortunately, it seems he’s also inherited a house in Barx, near Valencia, so he heads off on his scooter to check it out and sell it, then get back his instrument. After an unfortunate incident involving paint, he first connects with friendly innkeeper "Enrique" (Jaime Pujol), who advises him to keep quiet about his family history, and takes him to a dilapidated building that no one would reasonably want to purchase. What’s poor “Barney” supposed to do now? It turns out this town once had a brass band, so maybe he can use his musical talents to help mend the harm caused by his father. There's also "Paloma" (Candela Gómez), whom he befriends, much to the annoyance of another British resident in the village who learns about Barney’s family and decides to make things difficult for him. Will “Barney” manage to encourage these people to let go of the past and collaborate on a performance of Bach? There isn't much suspense; you could probably write the entire plot on a napkin at Nando’s, and the English spoken in this town is comparable to what you hear in many parts of London. Despite that, it’s an easy film to watch, with two lead actors who have good chemistry, are pleasant to look at, and plenty of music from the town's actual band to keep things moving without requiring much thought for ninety minutes of fairly predictable entertainment. You won’t be recalling it later, but it features a cast that looks like they could be in a catalog and some lovely scenery—it’s not awful.
