I thought *Treasure of Matecumbe* was reasonably enjoyable, largely thanks to the strong cast. Peter Ustinov, following an underwhelming role in *One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing* a few years prior, delivers a memorable performance as Snodgrass. Joan Hackett is also pleasant to watch as Paxton, particularly early on. Robert Foxworth is well-suited for his part as Uncle Jim. The two younger actors playing Davie and Thad are Johnny Doran and Billy Atmore; they aren't exceptional but are likable enough and do an adequate job. The storyline is where the film loses some appeal. While the adventurous aspects are fine, it does feel slow at times. It doesn’t really come across as a treasure hunt until near the end, which is a letdown—particularly considering the actors involved. Certain scenes haven't stood up well over time, and the movie shifts between serious and lighthearted tones too frequently; for example, there’s a KKK scene alongside a comedic subplot involving a bride running off. Despite those issues, it remains a film I consider good and one of Disney’s better live-action movies from the nineteen seventies.
