I went ahead and purchased this film based solely on the preview, trusting my instincts, and I’m glad I did; within the first five minutes, I knew I'd made a good decision. The performances across all of the characters were outstanding. What really stood out was how grounded the story felt, portraying situations that seemed genuinely relatable rather than contrived or unrealistic. The intense animosity between the mother and son only became clear when considering his inability to safeguard or show affection for her child. Her sharing details about her own difficult upbringing with him allowed him to recognize that she had done what she could given her own suffering and emotional damage. The older brother’s role as a caregiver also contributed to the process of recovery. I found the dynamic between the gay and straight brothers surprisingly lovely. While there were some shortcomings in the plot's progression and editing, I still rated it a 5 out of 4 because of the film’s powerful elements. Ultimately, it demonstrates that appearances can be deceiving and that healing and forgiveness are always possible, even when wounds appear irreparable. Despite our resistance, families share an inherent connection. It was worth the extra $6 to buy it rather than rent it; I anticipate wanting to watch it again.
