Wuchak on Tail Sting

5/10 · Dec 4, 2023

It strikes me as a predecessor to “Snakes on a Plane,” something like "Scorpions on a Plane," but made five years earlier. The film centers around a flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles where the passengers and staff find themselves dealing with scorpions that have changed in some way, accidentally escaping from the hold. “Tail Sting” (2001) is an entertaining monster movie produced for direct-to-video release. Some people might dismiss it as cheap, poorly made nonsense, and I’d probably agree with that assessment to a degree. However, it manages to be genuinely humorous in a dry fashion. The actresses portraying the women—Laura Putney (Jennifer), Shirly Brener (Shannon) and Tara Price (Courtney)—were adequate, but their characters could have been developed more fully. While the environment feels rather simplistic, and the practical effects aren’t computer-generated, there are still enough exciting moments to make it a decent film made on a small budget. I often think about whether this served as an influence for “Snakes on a Plane,” which was released five years afterward. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 32 minutes and appears to have been filmed in Los Angeles, according to the credits, although the opening sequence was apparently shot in New Zealand. GRADE: C
