John Chard on Oh, Mr. Porter!

10/10 · Sep 8, 2019

I requested a ticket to Birmingham, but I received one for Crewe instead... Oh Mr. Porter, what a funny man you are. William Porter is an incompetent railway employee who repeatedly loses his jobs. Despite this history, he’s assigned to the isolated Buggleskelly station in Northern Ireland, a location with a troubling record of previous station masters meeting unusual fates. "Every night when the moon gives light, the miller's ghost is seen.. He walks the track, a sack on his back, and his ear hole painted green.. He haunts the tunnel, he haunts the hill and the land that lies between...." This film offers constant laughs thanks to the comedic team of Will Hay, Moore Marriott, and Graham Moffatt. Set in the imagined Irish town of Buggleskelly, it maintains a cheerful pace from beginning to end. The humor comes from how haphazardly they manage their rail station, as well as the memorable people they encounter. It skillfully combines humorous reactions with a noticeable sense of mystery. Drawing on local superstitions, illicit gun running, and familiar railway stories, *Oh Mr. Porter!* provides viewers with pure entertainment that’s been restored to excellent quality. The circumstances in this area seem rather strange! The script is the work of Frank Launder, J.O.C. Orton, Val Guest, and Marriott Edgar, and Marcel Varnel directs the trio in what's considered one of their best films. While these “employees” are clearly not capable of running a rail station effectively—which provides some great comedic moments for us viewers—they prove to be quite good at solving mysteries. This leads to enjoyable scenes featuring a windmill and the final run of the locomotive Gladstone. Combining physical comedy with wonderful character interactions, it’s easy to see why *Oh, Mr. Porter!* remains a favorite among critics and is regularly shown on British television each year. Try to watch it soon because it's a genuine British comedy classic. 10/10
