Wuchak on Where the Boys Are

5/10 · May 25, 2023

“Where the Boys Are” (1984) revisits a familiar story—four female students from Massachusetts head to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for Spring Break, encountering mixed outcomes as they seek romantic connections. The film functions as something of an update to the earlier cult favorite from 1960, reflecting a more openly sexualized atmosphere following the social changes of the sixties. While not quite as jarring as movies like “American Pie,” it combines moments of carefree enjoyment with what I felt was excessive and somewhat uncomfortable displays of sexuality. Lynn-Holly Johnson and Lisa Hartman both deliver noteworthy performances among the female characters, though, predictably, there are other faces that appear less prominently. Russell Todd makes an impression as a character aspiring to be a rock star, which is nicely contrasted by Daniel McDonald’s portrayal of a wealthy young man who plays classical piano. Those familiar with “Friday the 13th Part 2” might recognize Todd from that film. I think "Shag" (1989) is a stronger example of this type of movie. Nevertheless, there are some enjoyable aspects to be found, such as Rick Derringer’s song “Shake Me.” The motion picture has a running time of 1 hour and 34 minutes and was filmed in the Fort Lauderdale region, including Boca Raton.
