I anticipated before watching this documentary that it wouldn’t include perspectives from Selina Soule, Chelsea Mitchell, Alanna Smith, and the numerous other biological women who lost opportunities to trans athletes, nor would it present their stories. I thought it would be biased going in. It's undeniable that trans women often possess a physical advantage over cisgender women, and people seem afraid to acknowledge this for fear of being labeled “transphobic.” I do find it troubling that parents with similar views to mine are directing harsh words toward these young transgender individuals who are still figuring out their identities. However, the situation is escalating to a point where sports as we’ve always known them—football, basketball, baseball, and so on—are fundamentally changing. It seems like we're continually making adjustments just to avoid hurting anyone's feelings. I wonder if there will ever be recognition that we are altering these sports, along with women’s world records and Olympic gold medal achievements, by allowing athletes who were not born female to compete. I struggle to understand how anyone can view this as equitable for female athletes, because biologically, we are the less physically strong gender, a reality that is unlikely to change regardless of our training efforts. If transgender athletes continue to participate alongside us, they will consistently outperform cisgender women. Yet, speaking about it risks accusations of transphobia, and people worry about making others feel excluded. But what about the feelings of those born as female? What about feeling displaced from sports now, with little chance of success if this trend continues? I expect many readers will see me as transphobic, but I simply want to express that after watching this documentary, I don’t feel inspired; instead, I feel saddened. It's disheartening that no one seems to be considering the feelings of female athletes within their respective sports. Everyone wants to focus on how inspirational these trans women are in pursuing whatever sport they believe is theirs. For me, it was painful hearing about the women I mentioned earlier—women who worked incredibly hard to achieve their goals—only to be surpassed by a transgender athlete born with inherent physical advantages. They’re largely forgotten and sidelined, left to realize there's nothing they can do to reach the top of their sport anymore. I hope anyone reading this review will pause and consider those women, and whether or not what is happening is fair to them.
