Wuchak on Lillith

Invoking a demon might not be the ideal solution for relationship problems. A young woman studying at college in the New Jersey/Brooklyn area finds out her boyfriend is being unfaithful and agrees to let a Wiccan friend summon a succubus for help. Things quickly spiral out of control from there. "Lillith" (2019) is a low-budget horror film that utilizes restricted camera perspectives, questionable cinematography, and occasionally suffers from poor audio quality, but the narrative itself proves engaging, as does the acting and dialogue; some of the musical score is also quite good. Laurence Fishburne’s son, Langston Fishburne, appears in a minor role as a professor. However, it's Savannah Whitten who truly shines as the demon embodying desire. While many describe this as a horror comedy, the humor primarily comes from Whitten's portrayal of the succubus – and that’s definitely a positive thing. It offers a unique perspective on the story. After all, wouldn't an immortal demon enjoy their work with a darkly humorous attitude? The film’s atmosphere and overall feel bring to mind “Decoys” (2004) and “Decoys 2” (2007), along with "Jennifer's Body" (2009), though it lacks those films’ production values. If you can overlook the technical shortcomings, “Lillith” is satisfying despite its subdued visuals. As a related example, consider “The Devil’s Nightmare,” also known as “The Devil Walks at Midnight” (1971), an enjoyable classic film about a succubus set in a Belgian castle near France. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 33 minutes and was filmed around Cranford, NJ, and Brooklyn, NY. GRADE: B-
