The narrative unfolds through a look back at "Tom" (Ernest Vernon), who shares a long-standing relationship with his partner "Joe" (Charles O’Neill) since their youth. Tension arises with his sister, "Ethel" (Charlie Clark), and her son "John" (Jonathan Butler), who reluctantly joins him for a birthday meeting in a tea room. Flashbacks reveal the younger versions of these characters—Steve Salt and Jack Knight—showing how they initially connected, developed feelings, and experienced conflict stemming from societal norms prevalent in 1970s working-class England. A tragic event emerges, potentially presenting an opportunity for family healing, although it might be a case of too little, too late. I found myself struggling to understand the transformation of the two young men into their older counterparts; it seemed rather strange. The script feels forced and occasionally leans into sentimentality in a somewhat cloying way. Furthermore, the core issues causing division within the family remain largely unexplored. It felt as if we were only hearing half a story. Older gay individuals may find resonance with the depicted situation, but for others, it’s likely to come across as simply a melancholy romance. The production values are acceptable, although the musical score is excessive. Despite conveying a message about how much less tolerant things used to be for LGBTQ+ people, the overall effect still feels somewhat underwhelming.
