The film begins in an amusing fashion, featuring a spoken-word narration combined with animated visuals depicting various methods people have used to harm birds—traps, projectiles, and gunfire among them. The story then shifts to address how birds came to exist on Earth, launching into a somewhat odd timeline exploring the history of bird study, from their evolutionary beginnings as fish to the development of feathers. As humans appear, along with videotape technology, it becomes clear we can’t replicate their ability to fly naturally, leading us to both admire and consume them. It turns out "chicken out" has an interesting origin story. Birdwatching enthusiasts enjoy dedicating considerable time observing these animals, but increasingly, different species are disappearing—similar to the fate of the dodo—so it's important that we begin treating these vital creatures with more respect, as they’re necessary for a healthy environment. The initial portion, lasting about five minutes, moves along nicely and is genuinely enjoyable; however, after that point, it relies heavily on stock footage, which pushes the writer’s cleverness past its limit. Cutting it down to roughly half its current duration would have made it more impactful and likely better at communicating the importance of conservation and appreciating these animals—even birds like vultures. It's something you could watch, but ultimately not very memorable, unfortunately.
