This isn't an over-the-top experience, but it delivers a good dose of unsettling tension. Hysteria is the work of director Freddie Francis and screenwriter Jimmy Sangster, featuring Robert Webber, Anthony Newlands, Jennifer Jayne, Maurice Denham, and Lelia Gordon in the cast. Don Banks composed the music, and John Wilcox handled the cinematography. Among the many Hammer films with single-word titles that emerged after Psycho, Hysteria is a worthwhile entry. The story centers on Webber’s character, Chris Smith, who is dealing with amnesia following a car accident. When he learns that an unknown person has been paying his hospital expenses, he becomes curious about their identity. While pursuing minimal clues and battling unsettling voices in his mind, Smith gets drawn into a web of secrets and suspicious behavior. The film unfolds as a black-and-white murder mystery with elements of psychopathy, paranoia, dangerous allure, plot surprises, and lengthy flashbacks. The narrative feels somewhat weak if you were to analyze it closely, but Sangster provides some clever ideas for entertainment's sake, and Francis manages to create suspense at various points in the film. The acting is satisfactory; Webber, who often receives criticism, performs adequately, while Denham gives a memorable portrayal of a detective who shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s a well-made, twisty thriller from Hammer. 7/10
