It’s a film centered around the lives of people in a small Australian surf town. Several key characters are dealing with difficult circumstances; one character, Midge, experiences an unstable home life due to his mother’s alcoholism and doesn't know who his father is. A close friend’s brother comes back after being gone for four years because he was exposed as gay and had a relationship with a teacher. As they spend time together, Midge develops feelings for him. The movie also includes surfing scenes, social gatherings, an unusual job, depictions of heterosexual encounters, conflicts within families, a soundtrack featuring rock music, and a poignant ending. I find myself revisiting this film periodically, and expect to do so in the future because of its distinctive atmosphere, genuine emotional portrayal, and wry sense of humor. It gets my recommendation.
