Anna (Jane Asher) remarks to her husband, Keith (Tim Woodward), that she finds it peculiar their intimate relationship has seemingly developed in an unexpected way after years of shared happiness. Her perception shifts when she uncovers evidence suggesting she isn't the only recipient of his attention, prompting her to arrange a meeting with the other woman. The person who shows up is far from what she anticipated—a revelation that leaves her reeling and struggling to understand the deception. It’s to this very lover that she increasingly confides, and when introduced to his friend Jim (Nigel Charnock), an individual rejected by his family and battling AIDS in its final stages, she finds herself viewing him with a maternal tenderness. The film feels somewhat straightforward, yet it carries a message that resonated even in 1993, a time when perspectives on what was then termed the “gay plague” may have evolved from the 1980s, though underlying prejudice and apprehension remained palpable. Asher and Mills carry much of the emotional weight, but for me, Charnock’s performance truly stands out as a portrayal of a man confronting his own death while those around him grapple with accepting who he is. It touches upon numerous issues superficially, yet it contributes to making a previously stigmatized subject more commonplace.
