The Cross Guns. Colt .45 (also known as Thundercloud) comes from director Edwin L. Marin and writer Thomas W. Blackburn, featuring Randolph Scott, Ruth Roman, Zachary Scott, Lloyd Bridges, Alan Hale Senior, and Chief Thundercloud. William Lava handled the music, with cinematography by Wilfred M. Cline. "A gun like any other source of power, is a force for either good or evil, being neither in itself, but dependent upon those who possess it." This film represents another Warner Brothers Western starring Randolph Scott, pairing him once again with Marin for an energetic and vibrant series of cowboy adventures. Scott portrays Steve Farrell, a gun salesman whose new Colt .45s are stolen by outlaw Jason Brett (Z Scott). As Brett and his gang cause trouble throughout the territory, Farrell pursues them with determination to put an end to their destructive spree. 1950 proved to be a significant year for Western films, bringing forth psychologically complex works like Broken Arrow, Devil’s Doorway, The Furies, The Gunfighter, and Winchester ’73. John Ford was also creating one of his renowned cavalry movies with Rio Grande. While Colt .45 doesn't reach the same level of sophistication as those productions, its box office success demonstrates that there remains a lot of enjoyment to be found in this kind of Randolph Scott Western. The film possesses a certain lack of pretension, and the depiction of the Native Americans—who play an important role in the narrative—is generally positive. Z Scott delivers a solid performance as the villain without resorting to excessive theatrics; Hale, who would die later in the same year, provides his usual dependable entertainment, and Roman is attractive despite having limited material to work with. Marin maintains a brisk pace, injecting enthusiasm into the frequent action sequences, while Cline vividly captures the scenic landscapes. Of course, some willingness to overlook implausibilities is required, as certain plot points are somewhat absurd. However, once the dramatic elements harmonize with the lightheartedness, it becomes an enjoyable experience for all ages—especially those who appreciate depictions of firearms. 7/10
