It’s essentially ‘Errol Flynn takes on the Nazis, Part One.’ Germany serves as the setting for this film. My viewing was unexpectedly complicated because my television or Blu-ray player malfunctioned and produced no sound—a first for both of them. I decided to proceed anyway, turning on the subtitles and watching without audio. (I later found out that simply unplugging both devices for a short time would have resolved the issue. These things happen. It did force me to focus more intently on what was unfolding onscreen, so it wasn’t a total loss.) The usual problem arose with Ronald Reagan, who makes Keanu Reeves seem like an accomplished performer. He wasn't terrible, though; it’s a war film, and he had a part that suited him well. Flynn received support from excellent actors like Raymond Massey and Alan Hale, whose presence I always appreciate. Plus, you have Raoul Walsh, one of the finest American directors of the era, so overall it’s a positive experience—unless you happen to be a Nazi.
