It's hard to dislike a performance where Bette Davis seems determined to parody "Fu Manchu"—she’s delightfully over-the-top! The film isn't perfect, however; Robert Wagner isn't exactly captivating on screen. He plays an agent for the United States government whom Davis manipulates with a device that alters perception, so he can assist her and her villainous associate “De Vere” (Denholm Elliott) in stealing a Polaris nuclear submarine worth a billion dollars from its Scottish base. To achieve this, she employs her intelligence and skillful methods to have him abduct his friend "Cavendish" (Gordon Jackson), who manages all the naval operations, intending to brainwash him into redirecting the submarine toward her sinister employer’s grasp. The central question becomes whether “Lawrence” (Wagner) possesses enough mental fortitude to withstand her advanced technology and defeat her elaborate scheme. What I appreciated most was Davis' obvious enjoyment in mocking the entire premise; she appears to be having a great time, and Elliott also delivers a solid performance as her wicked partner. There’s some attractive scenery from Argyllshire and an abundance of gadgets that look like they came directly from a “Doctor Who” clearance sale in 1972. Despite occasional minor characters appearing, the narrative largely rests on these three individuals, and for what it's worth, they handle the silly story adequately. It won’t be nominated for any awards, but I genuinely liked the ending—her ambitions involving Windsor Castle and that menacing smile of hers could peel wallpaper! Lower your expectations and you probably will find something to like.
