The title doesn’t really reflect what’s been achieved with Phillip Leacock’s film. Leacock, along with Dirk Bogarde who gives a wonderfully dignified performance, have created a war movie that feels genuinely profound. It avoids manipulative tricks to win over audiences and steers clear of tired tropes; instead, it presents an authentic portrayal of the emotional challenges, anxieties, and frustrations experienced by a Bomber Command Squadron in England as they prepared for a mission during 1943. Even the romantic elements are handled with care, never becoming overly sentimental and only serving to heighten the impact as the men prepare for their dangerous task. Some of the action scenes do feel dated, but that’s acceptable considering its age, while films like *Twelve O'Clock High*, released four years earlier, set an incredibly high standard that makes a direct comparison somewhat unfair. Nevertheless, this film more than holds its own because when those impressive Avro Lancasters ascend and roar through the clouds, you find yourself invested in each person involved in the mission, both airborne and on the ground. 7.5/10
