After winning $5,000 in a lottery, Mirabel (Frances Dee), an office worker, disregards the suggestion to invest and instead travels to New York for a lavish vacation. The hotel staff treats her well, but she quickly realizes how isolating it is to be in a city where she doesn’t know anyone. She connects with the elevator boy, Francis Lederer, who senses that she isn't enjoying herself and tries to cheer her up. However, he has something he’s keeping hidden, which could affect their developing relationship but requires him to remain silent for the time being—and this is where complications begin to arise. The plot follows a familiar path, admittedly, though Lederer delivers a captivating performance (avoiding any musical numbers) and there are some amusing jabs at the wealthy, arrogant people who populate what’s presented as high society, individuals so oblivious they wouldn't recognize royalty if it stood before them. “The customer is always right!” Seriously, where did that ridiculous rule come from?
