The film has layers beyond its widely recognized shower scene, largely thanks to Bernard Herrmann’s exceptional score. His use of jarring strings and the tempo of his music carries a significant weight, creating an escalating feeling of dread that makes it remain a remarkable work of cinema even more than six decades later. Janet Leigh is trying to establish herself with her financially challenged boyfriend, Sam (played by John Gavin), and when an unforeseen chance at work provides her with $40,000, she leaves town and finds shelter during a storm at the Bates motel, where she meets Norman (a strikingly handsome Anthony Perkins). The remainder unfolds as you experience it, but the narrative includes pretty much everything one could ask for in a thriller: a man dealing with issues related to his mother; some straightforward theft; desire, and while I wasn't completely satisfied by the conclusion, it’s a brilliantly dramatic piece of thoughtfully planned and executed filmmaking that ingeniously expands on what is essentially a straightforward story, supported by a strong cast. See it in theaters if possible; the house on the hill seems much more unsettling that way. It's really excellent.
