Wuchak on Psycho

9/10 · Aug 20, 2018

“We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven't you?” Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh, is a secretary from Phoenix who steals $40,000 and impulsively leaves town. Her flight takes her to a secluded motel in Fairvale, California, where she meets Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), an odd young man living with his mother. The story also involves a private investigator (Martin Balsam), Marion’s sister (Vera Miles), and a man she's secretly involved with (John Gavin). Alfred Hitchcock directed “Psycho,” adapting Robert Bloch’s novel, and its release in 1960 caused quite a stir. There’s a twist in the story that was pretty remarkable for the time; it’s something both this film and England’s “City of the Dead” (also known as "Horror Hotel") had, since that movie started filming six weeks before “Psycho” and came out in the UK at the same time—though it wasn't shown in America until two years later. Both are decent films, but “Psycho” is definitely better. Later on, there were three more movies made (in 1983, 1986, and 1990); the third one was sort of a prequel, with Anthony Perkins reprising his role as Norman and Vera Miles appearing in the first sequel. I’m not crazy about the fact that it's filmed in black and white. If you want to see what those locations look like in color, watch the sequels or the 1998 remake. The movie is an hour and 49 minutes long and was mostly shot on the Universal Studios backlot in Universal City, California, with other scenes filmed in Los Angeles & Gorman, California, and Phoenix, Arizona.
