Gloria Swanson didn’t make many films featuring sound, but this one stands out as my preferred choice. She continues to convey much through her eyes and mouth, and here she also includes singing, with her comedic sense really shining. The plot is straightforward and enjoyable; it revolves around a woman who keeps aspects of her history private until she learns that an old flame, "Jim" (played by Monroe Owsley), has started a relationship with her younger sister, "Joan" (Barbara Kent). For me, the standout performer is "Buster" (Arthur Lake), a somewhat awkward and tall young man also attracted to “Joan,” who devises a minor, clever plan that could potentially stop "Jim"—though he doesn’t really understand what or why he's doing it. His acting possesses an endearing quality which contributes significantly to the film's gentle humor. Maude Eburne is also effective as "Aunt Kate," having perfected facial expressions into something of a craft. It's a swiftly moving romantic story that feels airy and amusing, full of over-the-top moments, a beautiful score by Alfred Newman, and just a touch of sadness/comeuppance/joy at the very end. It’s definitely worth seeing.
