Irene Dunne delivers a wonderful performance portraying “Susan,” a young American woman who journeys to the UK alongside her curmudgeonly but good-hearted father, Frank Morgan, embodying his "Wizard of Oz" persona as “Hiram.” Upon arrival, she attends an elegant ball where she encounters and becomes enamored with "Sir John Ashwood," played by Alan Marshal, leading to a rapid romance. The narrative then follows her struggles as she attempts to establish a life with her new love—and his reserved family, whose opinions of Americans as boisterous and impolite prove challenging for her to accept. World War I disrupts events, alongside personal tragedy, and the focus turns to Dunne raising their young son (briefly portrayed by a recognizable 16-year-old Roddy McDowell), who later enters service in WWII—at that point played by Peter Lawford. Numerous commendable supporting performances deserve recognition, notably Dame May Whitty as the assertive yet somewhat sentimental nanny; Sir C. Aubrey Smith as the stern Colonel whose demeanor softens around Dunne and her child; Gladys Cooper as his mother; and a small role from Elizabeth Taylor. The story leans toward sentimentality but avoids being overly sweet—it illustrates a world in transition, encompassing not only conflicts but also significant shifts in British society as the established aristocracy witnesses the gradual decline of their wealth, status, and advantages. While frequently touched by sadness, this original and touching drama, with occasional moments of humor, has aged remarkably well.
