John Chard on Shoot to Kill

3/10 · Sep 26, 2014

The film Shoot to Kill, also known as Police Reporter, comes from director William Berke and writer Edwin V. Westrate, featuring Robert Kent, Luana Walters, Edmund MacDonald, and Russell Wade in the cast. Darell Calker and Gene Rodgers composed the music, with Benjamin H. Kline handling the cinematography. The story involves gangster Dixie Logan, played by Kent, who is set up by Assistant District Attorney Lawrence Dale (MacDonald). His wife, Marian (Walters), along with a reporter named George Mitchell (Wade), then try to expose Dale’s corruption. The combination of “poverty row” noir elements and mentions of betrayals might initially excite fans of the genre. However, Shoot to Kill has developed a small following despite lacking any real merit. The film is essentially flawed; while the plot twists and flashback structure seem good on paper, the director's execution is poor, and the acting isn’t much better. It feels like a beginner’s filmmaking project, even including a fight scene reminiscent of Keystone Cops. The movie begins with an encouraging car chase and accident, but that quickly proves misleading. What follows is a collection of underdeveloped characters as the director haphazardly puts things together, hoping something will stick. The few enjoyable parts include an extended piano piece by Gene Rodgers, some amusing newspaper headlines, and occasional moments of noir-style lighting. Thankfully, it’s relatively short, lasting just over an hour. Despite appearances, this isn't a worthwhile find for noir enthusiasts; the film doesn’t know what to do with its plot developments. It receives a 3/10 rating.
