John Chard on King Richard and the Crusaders

6/10 · May 31, 2014

David Butler directs King Richard and the Crusaders, a film written by John Twist based on Sir Walter Scott's “The Talisman.” The cast includes Rex Harrison, Virginia Mayo, George Sanders, Laurence Harvey, Robert Douglas, Michael Pate, and Paula Raymond. This WarnerColor/CinemaScope production features music by Max Steiner and cinematography by J. Peverell Marley. Despite being frequently cited as one of the fifty worst films ever made, David Butler’s movie possesses a certain visual appeal that should entertain those who appreciate lighter entertainment. The screenplay is often problematic, and its historical accuracy leaves much to be desired; Rex Harrison's performance—though generally strong—is somewhat peculiar when he sings in the style of a lovesick troubadour! However, the film benefits from vibrant colors, beautiful costumes, the amusing interplay between Harrison and Sanders, Max Steiner’s powerful score, and energetic action sequences (featuring impressive jousting). It doesn't rank among the very best films centered on swords and shields, but is it truly inferior to movies like Androcles and the Lion, Helen of Troy, or Sword of Lancelot? Not in my opinion! There’s enjoyment to be found here, whether it was intended or not. It earns a 6/10.
