It's a diverting, low-cost horror film set against the backdrop of the Nevada desert, though it feels cheap and simplistic. A busload of revelers heading to Burning Man from Las Vegas finds itself stranded in the Nevada wilderness when they’re targeted by a sinister cult. Tara Reid appears briefly at the beginning. "Party Bus to Hell" (2017) shares a premise with "The Craving" (2008), which had an even smaller budget, but substitutes a dangerous beast for an evil religious group. Also, “The Craving” takes itself seriously as horror whereas this film leans into horror comedy. The desert scenery, satanic cult members and silly costumes also evoke memories of "Race with the Devil" (1975) and "The Road Warrior" (1981) ("Mad Max" is even referenced within the movie). However, it doesn’t measure up to any of those, with “The Craving” being superior despite its extremely limited resources—though I will say that “The Road Warrior” certainly has merit and “Race with the Devil” offers some interesting elements. What works best in "Party Bus" are the impressive desert landscapes, a good soundtrack featuring strong metal tracks, and an entertaining, fast-paced feel. The monster itself looks pretty frightening too. These positives are lessened by scenes that feel excessively crude and verge on exploitation, and it suffers from underdeveloped female characters, with only a couple of exceptions. Another problem is how basic the story is: people trapped on a bus while bad guys attack from outside. It becomes tedious fairly quickly. "Vampegeddon" (2010), another film made for almost no money, comes to mind as a comparison, but this one is noticeably better. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 21 minutes and was filmed in Nevada. GRADE: D+
