John Chard on The Long Arm

8/10 · Aug 7, 2016

Charles Frend directed and Janet Green and Robert Barr wrote The Long Arm, which features Jack Hawkins, John Stratton, Dorothy Alison, and Michael Brooke. Gerard Schurmann composed the music, and Gordon Dines was in charge of cinematography. Detective-Superintendent Tom Halliday, portrayed by Hawkins, leads an inquiry into a series of safe robberies that then develops into a murder case. Coming from Ealing Studios, this is a well-crafted police procedural detective story. The investigation unfolds logically, avoiding unlikely scenarios, and the atmosphere of mystery remains strong throughout. A subtle subplot explores how the wives or girlfriends of policemen experience hardship because their partners are dedicated to their jobs; the filmmakers treat this theme with sensitivity. Moments of gentle humor also feel appropriate. The production values are excellent, utilizing numerous London locations that Dines gives a film noir look to, and Frend maintains a brisk pace while eliciting strong performances from the cast—Hawkins, in particular, is superb. If you’re searching for a classic British police story that respects your intelligence, this one fits the bill. It earns an 8/10.
