Peter McGinn on Top End Wedding

9/10 · Aug 14, 2022

I was taken aback by the mediocre rating given to Top End Wedding. While it avoids violence, sex scenes, or crude humor – which might disappoint some – I personally found it quite enjoyable and without any glaring flaws. It deviates from the usual rom-com formula because both couples are already established when the film begins, and there aren’t any romantic rivalries. A couple of familiar character tropes appear: Ada, a young woman driven to succeed who finds herself needing to work incredibly long hours for a promotion, and her direct female supervisor, who demands that level of dedication and seems indifferent to Ada's well-being as an individual. However, she does undergo some development, experiencing a shift in perspective which I appreciated. The story centers on Ada accepting a marriage proposal but being given just ten days to organize the wedding and honeymoon. The challenge arises when her mother has separated from her father, and Ada wants him present for the ceremony. This leads them back to her hometown where they find him upset; then they set out in search of her mother. Her mother is an indigenous woman, and the film offers a glimpse into that culture alongside some excellent music. I won’t elaborate further to avoid spoiling any of the smaller plot developments, but I will say that Ada's boss becomes involved later on, reflecting the character growth I mentioned earlier. She remains assertive and demanding, but her energy is channeled in a more constructive direction. Overall, I enjoyed the film and intend to watch it again.
