Charles Dance appearing in a project hasn’t recently inspired much excitement, and this proves to be another narrative where he’s essentially wearing costumes—a wig, doublet, and something else—to assist in unraveling a puzzle involving time displacement. Lotte Verbeek portrays "Eva," a student of medical history at an isolated institution where Charles Dance plays her supervisor, "Dr. Anmuth." As she investigates the complexities of her field, she finds that he was also a physician during the 1700s, pushing boundaries (though interpretations may vary) in clinical practice, which hadn’t really progressed much since ancient times and when leeches were sold for a considerable price. Her investigation leads to the discovery of a significant written work, and it's then that the story's interwoven timelines become apparent; her 21st-century self, who is pregnant, exhibits striking parallels with an 18th-century woman named "Elizabeth"—a wealthy individual under “Anmuth’s” care. Caught between contemporary demands from coworkers and familial reservations regarding any unconventional ideas, she must navigate a delicate situation. Verbeek doesn't project much strength in her role, nor does Sverrir Gudnason ("Lindgren"), who is similarly unremarkable. While Dance does lend some weight to the film, even he finds it difficult to elevate what could have been a genuinely captivating story. The production values are high; money was clearly invested, but not in the script or the actors, which is a letdown.
