The film culminates in a truly ridiculous sequence involving a firing squad, after which some angry Confederate prisoners—led by "Bentley" (George Hamilton)—resolve to get even with the Union soldiers who captured them. They manage to eliminate several guards, damage the fort using artillery, and then escape. “Maj. Walcott” (Glenn Ford) is assigned to track them down, and what follows might just be the worst mainstream Western I’ve ever encountered. Ford seems utterly disinterested in the material, and even a significant amount of facial hair can't give Hamilton the necessary presence as the plot treads familiar ground, echoing countless Civil War movies before it. The production values are almost as disappointing as the script, which feels like something hastily scribbled on a napkin—and Inger Stevens’s portrayal of the abducted, mistreated, and vengeful “Emily” (Walcott's fiancée) is simply odd. If you can stomach enduring this, keep an eye out for a younger Harrison Ford; Todd Armstrong also appears, though his career clearly hasn't flourished since "Jason and the Argonauts" (1963). It’s a lengthy and unsatisfying experience filled with unremarkable lines, and I would have gladly ended it about seventy minutes sooner.
