Rip Torn delivers a strong performance as an experienced Wyoming rancher who understands the difficulties of survival in such an isolated area. He portrays “Clyde,” who hires “Elinor” (Conchata Ferrell), a recently arrived widow, as his housekeeper. Elinor brings her young daughter (Megan Folsom), and eventually decides she wants to live independently. Clyde suggests against it, and they reach an agreement where they combine their assets. He was correct in that life there is isolating, and when winter arrives, the conditions are dark and intensely cold. The couple—whose marriage has always been based on practicality—experience a personal tragedy that challenges them and increases tension in their already strained relationship. It feels more like a documentary than a conventional drama, providing an impactful look at how harsh nature can be during extreme cold and heavy snowfall. Their reasons for staying together shift into something resembling dependence, but driven by need rather than desire, raising the question of whether they will ever develop genuine affection for one another. The cinematography is strikingly bleak, as are the two lead actors who star in what feels like a very confined film that would benefit from improved sound quality, even though the dialogue isn't particularly crucial. The narrative has a believable quality and features characters whom I didn’t find myself liking or connecting with, but I did admire them nonetheless.
