“Big Jim” (Clint Walker), true to his moniker, decides he’s done with being a lawman and moves his family to Wyoming, where some land awaits him. Almost immediately upon arrival, he finds that things aren't as peaceful as he'd hoped; the neighbors are anything but friendly. The Curry family, a powerful force in the area, have their sights set on Jim’s property, and “Jed” (Keenan Wynn) isn’t shy about making his intentions known. To complicate matters further, there’s also a bear causing trouble, decimating the livestock. Using this as justification, Curry hires bounty hunter “Cass” (Leo Gordon), who has a history with both Jim and his wife “Angela” (Martha Hyer), hoping he'll eliminate the new arrival. Walker performs as expected, handling his action sequences with well-planned moves and just the right amount of grime; Hyer offers smiles in all the appropriate moments, Jack Elam makes an appearance but is surprisingly subdued, and shopkeeper "Willy" (Nancy Kulp) provides some amusement as her store becomes a frequent site of brawls that must make inventory a nightmare. Wynn stands out as providing at least a bit of personality to what is otherwise a rather bland narrative, and naturally, there’s the bear. Unlike many films in this category, an actual bear appears on screen, and it's quite large—eight feet tall—and seemingly resistant to bullets. I found myself wishing it would make it through all the various snares and schemes set around its habitat after a few encounters. Any real feeling of threat is reserved for the conclusion, but even then, the film displays a certain hesitancy that persists throughout. It’s acceptable enough to watch, but Walker simply doesn't have the presence needed to take charge.
