Wuchak on City Beneath the Sea

7/10 · Nov 27, 2021

A pair of American divers, portrayed by Robert Ryan and Anthony Quinn, are hired for a job in Jamaica—to locate a submerged ship carrying gold—while also enjoying the local nightlife and company of women like Mala Powers and Suzan Ball. However, suspicious individuals complicate matters (George Mathews), although Woody Strode appears in a smaller part. "City Beneath the Sea," made in 1953, feels visually and tonally similar to "Dinosaurus!" from 1960, but shares story elements with films like "The Deep" (1977), "Into the Blue" (2005), its sequel "Into the Blue 2: The Reef" (2009), and "Fool's Gold" (2008). Surprisingly, “Into the Blue 2,” which was released directly to video, is the strongest of these comparisons. This film has merit as well, provided you can adjust to the style typical of early 1950s movies; it’s a lively and diverting kind of entertainment built around a buddy dynamic. Regarding the actresses, Suzan Ball brings to mind a taller Salma Hayek, while Mala Powers resembles Susan Hayward. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 27 minutes and was filmed at Universal Studios in Universal City, California. GRADE: B
