A palpable sense of dread and sadness permeates the opening moments of this moving animated film, depicting a mother and child gradually overtaken by an encroaching darkness that falls over their town, which has a distinctly biblical feel. It’s unclear if this is something overwhelmingly threatening or simply the sunset reflecting off the moon. As her anxiety grows, she notices a light far away. Could it possibly represent some chance of rescue for them both? The manner in which the darkness is presented really stands out; rather than receding gently like water, it seems to close in on her in distinct sections—almost as if it’s intentionally targeting this exposed pair. The sharp contrast between the vibrant color and the mostly grayscale figures works well, and the narrative gains from maintaining an ambiguity until the very end regarding what will ultimately befall this fragile woman and her child.
