Billy Zane’s career trajectory has clearly taken a downturn since “Tombstone,” and this film might represent an even lower point. He portrays the unpleasant king "Laypach," whose reign, according to legend, can only be ended by a mild-mannered farm boy who happens to be the descendant of Promethea's previous ruler. That farm boy is "Magnus" (Sam Murphy), who’s aware of his heritage and decides to liberate his people from the king’s control. Frankly, this character seems incapable of accomplishing anything, but he luckily meets “Ari” (Louis Herthum), who quickly teaches him what he needs to know. The king's soldiers fight with the skill level of Swiss kindergarteners, which helps Magnus advance toward claiming the throne. While director Dan Garcia deserves some credit for having a degree of imagination in this endeavor, the final product is terrible. It’s plagued by constant soft-focus visuals reminiscent of old home videos, truly awful performances, high-pitched voices, overly shiny appearances, and writing that's often laughable, making the eighty minutes feel considerably longer than they are. The film clearly lacked a substantial budget, and the CGI doesn't help matters. It’s possible these shortcomings could have been overlooked if Garcia had dedicated more time to developing the characters and less to the substandard visuals. I wonder who this was actually made for?
