Michael Powell delivers a genuinely entertaining little film centered on clerk "Jerry" (played by Jerry Verno), who unexpectedly receives an inheritance. The situation isn’t what he anticipated; after abruptly resigning from his job, he finds the hotel he's inherited is practically failing. Determined to turn things around, he revitalizes and reopens it with considerable publicity and a full house of guests—but their presence seems driven by something more than just good service. It soon becomes clear that the hotel’s notoriety stems from its rumored connection to the stolen Dysart Pearls, taken years ago. The question is whether "Jerry" can claim the £10,000 reward or if one of his diverse group of guests will find them first. There's a particularly memorable moment near the conclusion as everyone ascends the stairs, unsure of who’s trustworthy and who isn’t, and I appreciated the straightforwardness of how things wrap up. While everything feels somewhat simple, the production values and dialogue don’t offer any hints of Powell’s later work—but it's a short, pleasant, and quite enjoyable experience lasting about an hour.
