I’m already thinking about writing my own memorial notice after this one. George Sanders takes on the role of Simon Templar for the very first time, committing to four more films in the series. *The Saint Strikes Back* presents a fairly intricate story that sends The Saint to San Francisco where he finds himself facing off against what’s claimed to be a female crime boss. The screenplay by John Twist seems specifically designed for Sanders, allowing him to really lean into the character of a charmingly unscrupulous rogue with a biting wit. This is what elevates the film beyond mediocrity; the way it combines humor and suspense works exceptionally well thanks to Sanders' performance. Wendy Barrie, Jonathan Hale, Jerome Cowan, and Barry Fitzgerald provide solid supporting work, and director John Farrow, while not adding any particular visual flair, at least keeps things moving along at a good pace. It earns a 6/10 from me.
