John Chard on Highway Dragnet

5/10 · Mar 17, 2017

Nathan Juran directed Highway Dragnet, with a script from Herb Meadow, U.S. Anderson, Roger Corman, and Jerome Odlum. Richard Conte, Joan Bennett, Wanda Hendrix, and Reed Hadley are in the cast; Edward J. Kay handled the music and John J. Martin was responsible for the cinematography. The experience felt like paying for just one drink—a martini mixed with dynamite, at a cost of 65 cents! While some references classify it as film noir, that label doesn't really fit. It’s more accurately described as a story about a man fleeing after being wrongly charged with murder; he has to evade the police. He ends up traveling with two women who become suspicious of him. The plot involves law enforcement pursuing their suspect, featuring close calls and led by Reed "The Voice" Hadley in charge of the manhunt, alongside an ongoing question of identifying the actual killer. The acting is acceptable, and the production values are typical; at least the ending provides a somewhat interesting setting, and there are some lines that work well. Ultimately, it’s just average and not something I'd recommend rushing out to see. It gets a 5/10 from me.
