*Spring* is a perfectly acceptable film, though not particularly remarkable. I didn’t really find myself connecting with this Estonian production from 1970. I suspect that’s largely due to the fact that I am neither Estonian nor someone who grew up during that period; it's a movie that relies heavily on nostalgia. However, I will concede that it was well-crafted for its time. My lack of engagement, beyond those factors, mainly stems from the central figures—both how they are acted and depicted. I thought the child actors were quite bothersome, all of them; particularly those who seemed to be playing overly emotional roles. The film attempts to capture that "kids will be kids" spirit, but I don't believe their behavior needed to be so aggravating. The acting isn’t superb either, though I could overlook that if not for the problem with the children. The adult cast is considerably stronger. Because I like to see things through, I now feel compelled to watch the three sequels, which were released in 1976, 1990, and 2020—that should provide a fascinating look at Estonia’s film history over recent decades.
