CinemaSerf on The Quiller Memorandum

6/10 · Sep 2, 2024

The passage of years hasn’t served this somewhat awkward Cold War story well. Following the discovery of two deceased British operatives in Berlin, “Quiller” (George Segal) must pursue the mysterious "Oktober" (Max von Sydow) before he faces repercussions. The back-and-forth between the characters is genuinely engaging—each side determined to uncover the other’s clandestine base and identify potential spies—but director Michael Anderson struggles to lift the movie beyond a rather slow, deliberate rhythm. Segal performs adequately, but lacks charm, and even Alec Guinness and George Sanders, typically reliable performers, fail to generate much of an ominous atmosphere. The danger often feels manufactured, and while the plot progresses at a reasonable speed, it ultimately feels empty and doesn’t contain enough action to make it memorable. John Barry composed the music and wrote "Wednesday's Child" with Mack David, but there isn't much else that lingers after viewing.
